Workspace Technology has earned their fifth data centre industry award in six months by winning the ‘Datacentre UK Design/Build Supplier of the Year 2015’ classification at the annual Data Centre Solutions awards ceremony. This success has been due to their industry leading and innovative ‘Carbon Neutral Cooled Data Centre’ designed and built by Workspace Technology for Leicester City Council.
The annual DCS awards are intended to reward the product designers, manufacturers and suppliers that operate within the data centre industry. The awards, which recognise accomplishments ranging from energy efficiency to innovation in design and deployment, were determined by a public voting system where members of the data centre industry selected the project believed to be most deserving.
Workspace Technology was nominated within the Design and Build category alongside several other companies, all who are involved in the design and build of data centres within the EMEA region, but why did Workspace Technology’s project stand out from the rest?
This turnkey Tier 3 facility, built for Leicester City Council to replace their New Walk Centre legacy data centre, consists of a multitude of energy efficient and energy renewable technologies all working in unison and deployed within a modular and scalable architecture. The specialist infrastructure installed as part of the development included Workspace Technology’s Freecool® evaporative cooling systems which are all powered by photovoltaic panels, their tailormade Cool Wall module delivering independent back up/top up mechanical cooling, FlexAisle® airflow containment system to separate and prevent the mixing of hot and cold air, data centre infrastructure management (DCIM) software that continuously monitors and optimises the data centre’s power consumption activities. Lastly, the icing on the cake was the installation of Heat Recovery Systems to reuse the waste heat from the UPS room to maintain suitable temperature during cooler periods and therefore eliminating the need for mechanical heating.

The specialist design which uses our Freecool® evaporative cooling system directly combined with photovoltaic panels, along with airflow management and containment, has resulted in a PUE3 performance of sub 1.15 for Leicester City Council’s modular data centre. The fact that we are creating more energy than what is required to cool the data centre means that this modular facility can really be classed as an engineering triumph and should be used as a blueprint for future data centre developments”
