EU 20-20-20 Energy Directive

5th, March 2013

Many European IT professionals are unaware of the EU 20-20-20 Renewable Energy Directive designed to deliver a reduction of at least 20% of greenhouse gas emissions below 1990 levels, and a 20% reduction in primary energy used compared with projected levels.

Many IT professionals are unaware of the European Commission’s aims to see 20% of energy generated by renewable sources by 2020 across the European Union.

Other targets set by the Directive include a reduction of at least 20% of greenhouse gas emissions below 1990 levels, and a 20% reduction in primary energy used compared with projected levels.

The Directive, set by the European Commission also aims to improve the legal framework around the use of energy generated from renewable sources, and as such, is requiring member states to come up with national action plans.

To support the targets the European Commission released a voluntary Code of Conduct on Data Centre Energy Efficiency.  The European Commission has focused on the data center sector because it expects electricity consumed in data centers to contribute substantially to the electricity consumed in the European Union commercial sector in the near future.

Whilst many IT Professionals and Data Centre operators and managers have already taken actions to address the requirements of the directive there is still a large proportion still to quantify and address the issues involved.

One thing is clear and that is the EU 20-20-20 Directive is going to have a lasting impact on data centres, and despite the deadline still being eight years away, IT professionals have to act now.

Workspace Technology’ are a data centre design, build & management specialist who are leading the way in assisting data centre operators in delivering energy reduction programmes through a range of products and services.

Examples include our industry leading “Freecool” evaporative fresh air cooling technology that is proven to deliver significant energy reductions with typical investment payback terms of 18 to 36 months depending on the critical load. Other services offered by Workspace Technology include Managed EcoMeasure data centre optimisation and aisle containment systems to name but a few.
