The Glee of 5G

11th, March 2021

5G is set to be the most transformative communications technology in a generation and will enable a universe of new services.

However, Rome was not built in a day! it will come with challenges and hurdles to overcome!

To enable applications such as high-definition video, ultra-low-latency gaming, and advanced telemedicine to name only a few. 5G requires increased bandwidth and faster speeds. As more advanced and more critical applications go online, the reliability and security of the networks become paramount. This challenge for operators is compounded by the millions of additional cell sites required for 5G delivery, each demanding more power than its predecessor.

Nokia carried out a study that showed 5G networks can be up to 90% more efficient per traffic unit than their 4G predecessors, however they will require far more energy because of increased network density, heavy reliance on IT systems and infrastructure, and increased network use and accelerated traffic growth.

With this demand comes the need for more resilient, robust, and complex Telco Cabins to house the increasing density of the ILA’s and Repeater Cabins. Historically the Telco Cabin did not need to concern itself with high rack density but with 5G the IT infrastructure density is increasing, and cabinet are rising to 5 -6kw per rack.

These 5G cabinets house new complexities around DC and AC power integration, increased rack loads and require focused and directed airflow, environmental control, protection, physical and virtual security, and remote management and servicing. Providing a scalable, sustainable, and robust Telco and IT infrastructure solution to protect and optimize your 5G deployments is vital to support the functioning of 5G.

Edge computing and 5G are likely to co-evolve – with both working in tandem to exploit the best features of each other. According to Gartner, edge computing will account for 75 percent of enterprise-generated data by 2025

Global IP traffic is reaching 5 Zettabytes, Instagram has hit 1 billion users and Facebook is now more than 2.3 billion users globally. Every 100 milliseconds of latency reportedly cost Amazon 1% of sales. Google found an extra 500 ms delay in search page generation time dropped traffic by 20 percent.

For smart cities to become a reality, it will be vital that the necessary infrastructure exists. This is especially important as existing infrastructure like Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) and 4G networks will struggle to handle the increasing level of traffic, or provide the low-latency, high-speed connectivity required by the future smart city. Creating a truly smart city therefore lies in the hands of the telecom’s operators and service providers.

Are you ready for 5G challenge? And is a professional Data Centre builder the way forward to ensure your new demands are catered for?
