Unprecedented Hat Trick of Awards for University of Aberdeen Data Centre

17th, January 2014

Workspace Technology is pleased to announce that a Hat Trick of Awards have been received for it's University of Aberdeen data centre project completed in 2013.

The North East of Scotland Shared Data Centre (NESSDC) is a £1.5m initiative involving the creation of a unique shared services primary data centre facility, for all four tertiary educational establishments in the North East of Scotland has been awarded the following accolades:

ComputerWeekley - Public Sector Data Centre of The Year 2013

British Computer Society - Data Centre Project of the Year

Green Gown - Effectiveness and Efficiency in the Estate

The project designed and built by Workspace Technology involved extensive upgrading of the aging operational and live primary data centre during term time.

This was a 10 month, large-scale, complex and high-risk strategic project. Undertaken by Workspace Technology Ltd in partnership with University staff, the major objective in the project was to spearhead a shared service approach to data centre infrastructure, whilst delivering significant energy savings by allowing institutions to vacate current environmentally unfriendly facilities.

The project involved re-locating over 400 servers in the University of Aberdeen’s data centre, re-locating and re-wiring 100 live network components and two full Janet racks, replacing all flooring and ceilings and major external construction work.

Unbelievably, unplanned outages throughout the deployment totalled less than 40 minutes.  As commented by Computer Weekly this project “is an example of a true data centre transformation. Many organisations would suffer from a number of downtime periods but to only have 40 minutes of downtime in incredible especially with the work that was undertaken. Whoever was Project Manager managing this transformation should be given a bottle of champagne.”

In partnership with Workspace Technology the University of Aberdeen has shown how a professional approach to shared services can lead to an efficient and effective data centre being put in place that meets the needs for multiple users.

Workspace Technology’s industry leading evaporative free air Freecool® to energy efficient technology was at the heart of the technical solution and has led to a measurable sub 1.1 PUE performance.

Roy Griffiths Technical Director of Workspace Technology commented “We are extremely pleased to have been recognised by all three organisations and for these award. These awards highlight the professionalism of our project team and elevates the exceptional and unrivalled expertise Workspace Technology can offers our clients in high risk complex projects.”
